My favorite photo by Gordon Parks is the one he took of Langston Hughes:
This is an informal portrait and a formal portrait. It is informal because he is not dressed real classy or formal and his hand is going off somewhere almost random. It is formal because he looks a little rigid and he is looking directly at the camera.
This photo has the feeling of mysteriousness. The lighting coming from the side only illuminates half of his face and the other half is almost completely hidden in shadow and he has a real serious look on his face. And it leaves you wondering what he's feeling or thinking and why he is raising his hand the way he is.
